About Us
Welcoming guests with warmth and character

Originally a family home used as a Shetland Pony stud farm, award-winning Transy stud was founded in 1896 by William Mungall at Transy, Dunfermline. Mr Mungall also purchased Lochend, a small farm that lies 3 miles north of Dunfermline where the ponies were also kept. The stables at Transy were of a wooden structure and were situated in a very sheltered site at the bottom of a hill, with the gardens further up the hill. There was a small paddock beside the stables where all the early training was done.
The first breeding stud was a mare called Joan & a stallion called Darby. These ponies were bought in 1897 and produced the first foal bred by the Transy stud in 1899, a filly called Dot. This filly was sold in 1901 for £5. In September 1899, Mr Mungall travelled to Shetland and purchased 6 highly pedigreed ponies
-Silver Queen & her filly foal Stella -2 year old filly, Princess of Wales -Mare, Boadicea & her colt foal -Young stallion, Proudfoot
By 1908 the stud consisted of about 40 ponies. Most of these ponies were predominately black as Mr Mungall did not care for light colours. His first success as an exhibitor was in 1901 and in the years before World War I, the stud won many prizes in the show ring.
From 1909 – 1914, the Championship at the Highland Show was won by ponies from the stud;
-1909, Eirik -1910, Silverton -1911, Silver Queen -1912, Silverton -1913, Selwood -1914, Sovereign
It was not until 1931 at the 100th Show of the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland that the Stud again won the championship with ‘Stella of Transy’. The ponies were being shown on a regular basis around the country with Transy bloodlines winning in 1935-1939. All showing of ponies came to a stop after 1939 and the outbreak of the Second World War.
